This event marked an important milestone on the road to the largest football tournament on the global stage, while also providing an early overview of the major matches that will take place during the group phase in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

A Spectacular Final Draw in the Capital of the United States

The group stage map of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ was announced during the Final Draw held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC.
Several exciting matches immediately captured attention, including Brazil facing Morocco, the

Netherlands taking on Japan, and a repeat encounter between France and Senegal, who previously made history as the 2002 World Cup champions.

In addition, debutant nations such as Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan face major challenges as they are set to compete against global powerhouses such as Spain, Germany, Argentina, and Portugal.

The opening match of the tournament has also been confirmed, with Mexico set to face South Africa in Mexico City on Thursday, 11 June 2026.

The Full Match Schedule as the Next Milestone

The next major step toward the 2026 World Cup is the announcement of the updated match schedule.
This schedule will be released live via FIFA.com on Saturday, 6 December, with all 104 matches, including venues and kick-off times, confirmed at 12:00 EST or 18:00 CET in Washington DC.

A Lineup of Global Figures at the Draw Event

The draw for the 12 groups was conducted by former England national team captain Rio Ferdinand. He was joined by a number of global sports icons, including Tom Brady, Wayne Gretzky, Aaron Judge, and Shaquille O’Neal.

The event was hosted by Kevin Hart, Heidi Klum, and Danny Ramirez, and was further enhanced by a performance from Andrea Bocelli. The global audience was also entertained by Robbie Williams, Nicole Scherzinger, Lauryn Hill, and Village People.

Competition Format and Qualified Teams

The top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, will advance to the round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026™.

Explanation of the Match Schedule and Remaining Qualification Places

Six of the total 48 participants in the FIFA World Cup 2026™ have yet to be determined and will only be confirmed in March 2026. 

Four of these places will come from the UEFA play-off round, which will be contested by Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czech Republic, Denmark, Italy, Kosovo, Northern Ireland, North Macedonia, Poland, Republic of Ireland, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden, Türkiye, Ukraine, and Wales.

The remaining two tickets will be contested by six nations, namely Bolivia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia, and Suriname, through the FIFA World Cup 2026™ Play-Off Tournament.
